About this tool
Two tools that share a clock. The stopwatch counts up in hundredths and records laps, showing each lap on its own alongside the running total, and marking the fastest and slowest once there are enough of them to compare. The countdown runs the other way, with presets for the durations people actually use and a chime when it reaches zero. Both derive their time from a fixed reference instant rather than counting ticks, which is what stops them drifting when the tab goes to the background — a stopwatch that loses ten seconds because you checked your email is not a stopwatch. The stopwatch redraws with the screen's refresh rather than on a timer, which is why the hundredths look smooth.
Example
Three laps of 5.00s, 7.00s and 3.00s show a total of 15 seconds, with lap 3 marked fastest, lap 2 slowest, and a 5-second average.
How to use
- 1Choose Stopwatch or Countdown at the top.
- 2Stopwatch: Start to run, Lap to mark a split, Stop to pause and Reset to clear.
- 3Countdown: set minutes and seconds or tap a preset, then Start.
- 4Laps show the individual lap time and the total elapsed at that point.

Frequently asked questions
Will the timer be accurate if I switch tabs?
The elapsed and remaining times will be. Browsers throttle background tabs, so the display may stop updating smoothly, but both modes recompute from a fixed reference instant — so the moment you come back, the number is right.
What's the difference between the lap time and the total?
The lap column is how long that single lap took; the total is the elapsed time when you pressed Lap. So laps of 5, 7 and 3 seconds show totals of 5, 12 and 15.
How precise is it?
It displays hundredths of a second and updates with the screen refresh, but browser timing isn't laboratory-grade — expect it to be reliable to a few hundredths, which is fine for training splits, cooking and presentations. Don't use it to time a race that matters.
Does the countdown keep going if I close the tab?
No. There's no server and no background process — closing the page ends it. For something you need to be reminded about later, the Reminder tool can add an event to your calendar instead.
Can I turn the end sound off?
Yes, with the checkbox next to the countdown. The chime is generated in the browser rather than loaded as a file, and your browser may keep it silent until you've clicked something on the page — that's an autoplay rule, not a bug.
